Painting Somerset Showcase
Commissions
Personalised art is a wonderful memento and a fabulous gift. but the process of commissioning can be intimidating and some people fear the cost will be prohibitive. I aim to make it a friendly, transparent and collaborative process that you will enjoy and which will ensure you get exactly what you want.
Commissions are surprisingly affordable. The price of my commissions are based predominently on size and the cost will be roughly the same as other comparable work you will see in the shop with a small premium for any preparatory work I need to do. So the cost for an unframed work is likely to be between £150 and £500. If that is in your budget - read on!
My commissions are often houses, landscapes or animals. The starting point for my paintings is just a subject - what would you like to see in the finished work? If you can share a reference photograph it would help the conversation but its not essential at this stage.
The conversation about what you want is free of charge. Tell me about the event you want to commemorate. What do you not want to see in the finished work (neighbouring buildings, things in the background, the winter sky)? What would you like to see (some spring flowers, your friend's favourite coat, the football that always seemed to be in the garden)?
I do need some reference material. I can visit to take some photos if required (if it's local this will also be free of charge). It is unlikely that one photo will give me everything I need and it is also unlikely that you will have the perfect photograph for me to copy - if you did why would you want a painting right? A typical commission is made up of a great photo of the view but in bad light and with a car in front, and a few other photos showing what's missing or what you'd like adding in the finished picture.
I can turn winter into summer, hide the ugly drain cover, move trees, remove lampposts and satellite dishes.
We can then talk about the composition, size and materials of the finished work. The smallest painting will be around A4 in watercolour and the largest will be A2 acrylic. for a small charge I can sketch out some ideas on composition to give you a better view of what the finished work will look like.
The choice is then yours on whether you want to proceed. The image rights remain mine unless agreed separately and so any additional prints or greeting cards would be arranged me at a reasonable cost. I would be happy to discuss this with you in advance.
My Exhibitions
The Modern Kitchen - Kenilworth
November 2021 - ongoing
Thanks to the wonderful Richard and Nicola I have a rotating display of 6-7 paintings in the Modern Kitchen in Kenilworth. Its a great place to have a cup of the best coffee in Kenilworth too!
Kenilworth Artists
Occasional
The hugely talented Kenilworth Artists group display work regularly in vacant shop windows in Kenilworth - usually Poundland, Thorntons and TUI. Its a nice way to bring them to life and to showcase the variety and depth of talent Kenilworth has
Plein Air painting
Occasional
There are a number of events through the year where I paint outdoors and love to meet people while I am doing so. In 2021 I painted in Kenilworth Castle, Odibourne Allotments and Jephson Gardens in Leamington. If you see me please say hello and feel free to ask questions. I don't mind being disturbed
Markets
Occasional
I do also occasionally exhibit at local markets and shows. In 2021 I took part in Art In The Park in Leamington and the Abbey End Artists Market in Kenilworth
Work In Progress
Pitney - St John the Baptist's Church
I was struck by an Autumn morning with the sun rising over the trees and catching the beautiful yellow stone against a dark background sky. I like the shadows cast across the architecture and how this lifts the perspective too. This is a quite large watercolour painting in the early stages. The inky blue sky textured with salt is a signature for the painting and I am hoping I can make sure the church pops against this. I think the next stage will be to get all of the scene in place at least with the base layers and then I can start to adjust tones and palette a little before getting on to detail, the deep shadow and highlights. So far so good
